5:30 pm
starts right now. thanks so much for joining us. i'm janelle wang and i'm raj mathai. the bart extension into downtown san jose and santa clara was already one of the largest public projects ever in the south bay, and that was before for all sorts of cost increases and delays. now, a former san jose mayor is publicly and harshly criticizing this ongoing project. nbc's robert honda joins us from the berryessa bart station with the details. former mayor tom mchenry is not the first to voice frustration over the bart extension project, but starting with an op-ed he wrote with prominent developer lieu wolf, mchenry is saying it might be a good idea for the agency in charge to cut their losses. santa clara county chose not to be part of the bart system when it was started in the 70s. that's all changed now. bart and the vta, the county valley transportation authority, began
5:31 pm
linking the system in 2009, completing the so-called berryessa extension in 2020. but this next phase is more ambitious, going through and underneath downtown san jose through to santa clara and the project price tag has jumped from around 5 billion to 12.8 billion. and the completion date has been moved from 2026 to 20 30 to 2037. former san jose mayor tom mchenry, who has business interests downtown, once supported the project but now is publicly lambasting the vta and says he'd like to see the project scrapped and completed with a bus system. the other day, nasa came out and their latest mission to mars is going to cost $11 billion. i said to somebody with another billion, they could get the berryessa mchenry says. if nothing else, he'd like outside experts brought in. there's people who can tell us, will this be obsolete by the time it's finished? you know, with with the things that are
5:32 pm
happening in technology, the fact that driverless automobiles, driverless busses there is a whole number of things way beyond them. you know, my ability to, to predict it. but there are people we can get and we should. the vta ceo and general manager says she welcomes any feedback or criticism, but to insinuate that vta cannot build a project if you look at most projects within this county, vta has built them on time and on budget. i mean, the first phase of the bart extension was built $100 million under budget, over 5% under budget. the vta ceo also says she doesn't believe the critics speak for the federal agency who will fund the project or the public. i don't necessarily believe that the voters voted three times to have their sales taxes go to a bus centric or light rail system to serve passenger rail around the
5:33 pm
county. they want bart. regardless, the vta is literally going to plow ahead with a groundbreaking in mid june that will start the tunneling process in san jose. robert honda, nbc, bay area news robert, thank you. a well-known former congressman from the south bay has died. pete mccloskey died peacefully at his home in winters, which is west of sacramento. according to his attorney. often described as a liberal republican, mccloskey opposed the vietnam war and ran on an antiwar platform to try to unseat president richard nixon back in 1972. he served in congress from 1967 to 1983, winning reelection seven times and representing parts of the peninsula and south bay. he championed environmental causes, coauthored the 1973 endangered species act, and helped launch the first earth day. pete mccloskey was 96 years old. two students were taken to the hospital today after a carbon
5:34 pm
dioxide exposure in a classroom. it happened around 830 this morning at sunrise middle school in san jose. san jose fire got calls about an odor that was making students and a teacher in a classroom feel sick. dozens of people were having difficulty breathing when fire crews arrived. we all exhibited some symptoms immediately. when you walked in the classroom, you started coughing, but then it as soon as you left, it went away. but there were three that the symptoms seemed to last a little longer. the fire department said that most of the students symptoms were gone by 1030, and classes resumed as normal. two students were taken to the hospital for evaluation at the request of their parents. no word yet on how they're doing. tonight, the antioch school board may vote on the fate of its embattled superintendent. the controversy stems from a story that our investigative unit exposed recently, allegations that maintenance director ken turnage, bull hid and harassed employees, including a claim he moved an
5:35 pm
employee's desk to a rooftop as punishment. here's a photo of him there. and there's that desk on the roof with the yellow tent there. turnage is now on administrative leave in the wake of our report. the allegations also include what some claim is a cozy relationship with antioch's superintendent, stephanie anello, who has since recused herself from leading any of the investigations. the board president plans to call for a vote to remove superintend anello. previously, neither anello or turnage would respond to our request for comment. well, about 20 customers in richmond are without water right now as crews complete repairs of a water main break. main ruptured about 5 a.m. at 47th near carlson boulevard. a flood sent mud and water into surrounding streets. you can see it there. crews closed carson boulevard. the city says the repairs should be completed in about 30 minutes from now. we are celebrating asian american,

native hawaiian and pacific islander heritage here at nbc bay area, shining a light on some of the people who make this area so unique. san francisco's north beach may be considered an italian neighborhood, but as nbc bay area's joe rosato jr. shows us the longtime face behind the counter at one of its most legendary cafes is from a world away. good morning. cappuccino grande. how are you doing? one. i'm good. how are you now that you're here? i'm much better when you've been around long enough. let's start. you become legend. hey, patty. such is the case of north beach's cafe trieste. opened in 1956 by papa johnny giotta as the west coast first espresso house. cappuccino is coming okay for nearly half of that historic 68 year run, it's been paul major. nice day today behind the counter. good morning. nice haircut. okay. cafe latte with oat. eric, are
5:37 pm
you alone? major's own run at the cafe began in 1991. there you go. he was visiting the city by the bay and asked about a job . talk to the manager for a few minutes, and the manager said, okay, you can start working tomorrow. he got his on the job training from the owner's italian sister, yolanda, pretty much my mentor. how to deal with people. customers teach me how to speak italian. the numbers only in the neighborhood known as the heart of the city, cafe trieste is for many home base in the morning, and the people has been coming here for decades and, you know, since the 60s or 70s. so they still come here every morning. and so it's just like a big family. i mean, cappuccino grande. what is your other half? cabrillo street. and most of those regulars don't even need to order americano with the cream latte. not too much foam. you want a pastry? so i look at the face and, you
5:38 pm
know, remember the drinks. thanks, paul. you're welcome. make it hot here. it's only a two person operation behind the counter, so you pretty much do everything you make the coffee, you clean the table. oh, do the dishes you're making sandwich. you serve the pastries. i'm gonna go. it's somewhat fitting. major was born in indonesia, on the island of java. drink coffee every day since i was little. single espresso, one of nine kids. he's found an extended family here. morning, tarzan. i know, but it's still sad. eric. eric, this is their living room. this is their second home. i am their second home. how many dogs do you have this week? it's going to be a nice week in his 33 years behind the counter, mage has trained countless other baristas. he's doing it right and made who knows how many coffee drinks. maybe i serve more than a million coffees, i don't know. yeah. drink your coffee before you come here. the jokes and the witty banter he has with the people who come and go, the number of times i've
5:39 pm
heard him yell to the entire line, to the back of the cafe, sorry, we're out of coffee. the tourist is like, what? after decades of giving back to the cafe, one day about ten years ago, the cafe gave back to mage in an unexpected way. i met my husband, karsten here. yeah, they legalized the gay marriage 2015. we got married 2015. it's a miracle. you know, people don't think this is a big deal, but it's a big deal for me. if such records were kept major might be the longest serving barista in san francisco or even the west coast. the answer is yes. please but since they're not, he's simply content with the 33 years of life he's poured into this neighborhood. the customers, you know, they're my family. joe rosato jr so far, so good. no complain. nbc bay area news. trending upward. bedbugs and east bay family learned a
5:40 pm
hard lesson on vacation. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we'll help them get their money back, and we'll help you avoid this six legged nuisance. next i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. sure was nice to get in on that sunshine and talk about warmer temperatures. up to 80 right now in san jose. how much more and how hot it's going to get for us. i have

creeps the heebie jeebies. we're talking, willie. we're talking bedbugs. they are bouncing back. an east bay family found out the hard way. they asked our consumer investigator, chris chmura, for some help. kris a bug expert, tells us the bed bug population is rising. and here's one data point from a walnut creek family. just look at what nathan gaither's family found in
5:43 pm
a vacation rental on their very first night there. all it took was pulling back the covers and looking just at the line of the mattress, and they were kind of all over the place. the gaither's packed up immediately and booked a nearby hotel. last minute while they were out of pocket. 1200 extra dollars and getting nowhere. getting reimbursed. so they contacted us coming up tonight at 11. we'll explain what happened when we contacted the vacation rental company. plus, we'll share a list of the top 50 u.s. cities where exterminators are finding bedbugs like these. also, a couple of easy steps to find and hopefully fend off these prolific six legged hitchhikers. the gaithers contacted us online . you can to snap the qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form online, please join us again tonight at 11:00 kris. we will see you then. a massive cleanup is now underway in several midwestern states after a series of powerful and destructive
5:44 pm
tornadoes. at least three twisters touched down near portage and kalamazoo, michigan. hospitals have treated about a dozen injured people, but thankfully, so far, no reports of any deaths or major injuries. some incredible video here of the tornado damage at this fedex facility. overnight winds were so strong they ripped huge chunks of the roof and walls off of the building that's in michigan. this all comes after 24 tornadoes swept across the plains on monday. jeffrey neary is here now. this was pretty intense and it just kept going seemingly. and there's more tonight over kentucky. we could have some large tornadoes. they have this frontal system that's just kind of stalled out. so they're getting that warm, humid air moving in from the south. tomorrow goes from dallas all the way over towards atlanta. they've been hit. so hard already. they have yeah one system after another for them. for us we're kind of on the flip side of things here. we have a lot of sunshine moving in and
5:45 pm
hotter temperatures. man, it felt kind of like the weekend out there. at least. you know, you were just kind of relaxed. we had that sunshine. it was really, really nice, let's go ahead and get a look at that weather pattern here. and we can show you exactly what is controlling the weather. it's all about this area of high pressure moving that storm track to the north and allowing this heat to move in from the south. and check this out. it's going to set us up this weather pattern right here with the warmest stretch of weather all year long, speaking of which, only five weekends with sunshine in 2024, we're going to add to that we are locked in with sunshine this upcoming saturday. and also on sunday. we've got a preview of that in the scrolling 7-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, and we'll show you more on those temperatures here. once i get through the wind, we are going to see a little bit of wind here. still kind of hanging on as we head through tomorrow from a system that's over the intermountain west. it's just kind of moving that wind in here from the north and the so i think through tomorrow morning we're looking at winds of 20 to
5:46 pm
40, especially in the mountains. then as we head through tomorrow evening, we'll start to see that wind calming on down only five to about 15mph. so a little bit more wind to go here as we head through tomorrow morning. otherwise as we started off, we're going to begin down here into the 50s. not nearly as cold as it has been. we're just going up a little bit more. it'll make it a lot more comfortable out here. i will put us to 58 here in the south bay, over to the east bay, 57. and for the north bay 59. temperatures as we move through tomorrow, going up another 4 to 7 degrees. that's going to put us close to 90 here for some of the inland valleys, up to 87 in concord, 84 in san jose, 86 in napa. look at the coastline here. san francisco, 79 degrees and you got some beach weather out here in half moon bay, right up to 70 on a ten day forecast here. while we are looking at the warmer weather this weekend, the one thing that it may certainly kind of irritate is your allergies. we've got oak, cedar and grasses all in the high category. so just know that coming into the next several days and that ten day forecast here will keep
5:47 pm
those 80s in saturday and sunday. warmest day will be saturday at 87. and then we're going to hold on to this trend of 80s you'll see in san jose right through next wednesday, likely the weekend after that may not be as warm. we could be dipping back down into the low 70s. so we got some hot weather here. you don't have to feel bad about enjoying that sunshine we've had so many years in the past where we've been stuck in the drought. i wanted to show you the latest drought map and we are drought free here through most of the state. there's just a little bit left down here towards the california arizona border and right up towards the california oregon border. but bay area drought free and we are not expected to head back into one through the next 6 to 8 months. the way the reservoirs and the snowpack and the rain season have all come in for us right here on my 7-day forecast, we're at 74 in san francisco on saturday and for mother's day, 69 a little bit of cloud cover returning and through the inland valleys. not going to disappoint. 89 on friday, 88 on saturday. dips a little bit on
5:48 pm
sunday to 83. but that is still very comfortable weather through the next several days. good for all. good for all the mamas out there for sunday. yes, thank you jeff. up next things are looking up for the sharks. what an incredible time for this franchise. if after last night's big news, the top pick in the nhl draft is coming to san jose, are so thrilled as. the warriors

abrading the sharks celebrating is happy because the sharks are likely to drop to his son with the number one overall draft pick. how cool is that? the warriors head trainer says he's looking forward to his 17 year old son to arrive in san jose. here's nbc's anthony flores. the first overall selection in the 2024 nhl draft belongs to the san jose sharks. fans in san jose were jumping out of their seats when the sharks won the nhl lottery for the first time in franchise history. the moment was especially meaningful for rick celebrini. we were nervous and anxious, and to see the sharks win it, win the lottery was was phenomenal. the director of sports medicine and performance for the warriors is the father of mcclintock celebrini, who the sharks say they're likely going to take with the number one overall pick. we're a very tight knit

family, and to have your son, so close to home would be would be phenomenal. the celebrities have history with the sharks. when rick first got the job with the warriors in 2018, macklin briefly lived in the bay area and played a season with the junior sharks under 14 team. their coaches did a phenomenal job with them. the canadian forward has been called a generational talent by some hockey experts. he dominated the college ice at boston university as a freshman. at 17 years old, he's the youngest in ncaa history to win the player of the year award. even if the sharks select him first overall. macklin has the option to return to college. it really comes down to us sitting down with management, with the coaches and understanding what their plan is with him because of their demanding schedules, macklin hasn't spent much time around the warriors, but the exposure he has had has been impactful. being around guys like steve kerr and steph curry and
5:53 pm
draymond and klay and the group, it was more the quality of their exposure versus the quantity. the warriors, sharks fans and the rest of the hockey world will be waiting to hear macklin scalabrini's name called when the sharks make their first pick during the nhl draft on june 28th. anthony florez, nbc bay area. that's going to be fun. great to see him when he arrives here at some point. well, baseball today the a's are playing a rare scheduled doubleheader to wrap up a four game series against the first place texas rangers. plenty of sunshine at the coliseum. yeah, there's some excitement there. hot dogs look good. the a's hoping to snap a three game losing streak. we pick up the action bottom of the second inning. shea langeliers had a monster afternoon. this is a two run homer here. and the a's had a 2 to 1 lead. the game, though, was tied 4 to 4 in the fifth inning. and brett harris is going to hit a home run. it's the go ahead homer. a's win 9 to
